About the Program
The Wonju Literature Residency Program 2026 invites international writers to an enriching 8-week experience in Wonju, a UNESCO City of Literature in South Korea. This fully funded program, held at the Toji Cultural Center from September 1 to October 31, 2026, offers a unique chance for writers to focus on their craft, experience Korean culture, and connect with local artists.
It's designed for poets, essayists, storytellers, and other creative writers who wish to immerse themselves in a new environment away from daily distractions. The program aims to foster mutual understanding and camaraderie among literary cities globally.

Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this residency, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Possess upper-intermediate proficiency in either English or Korean.
- Have a minimum of five years of creative writing experience, with at least one piece translated into Korean or English.
- Demonstrate willingness to participate in local festivals, meetings, interviews, and literary activities.
- Agree to take part in a photo session and interview, and allow your profile and photos to be uploaded to Wonju City of Literature’s promotional media.
- Show a strong passion for Korean literature and culture.
- Participate in at least one local literary festival or exchange event in Korea during the residency.
- During the sixth week of the residency, write a brief creative piece (such as a poem or essay) about Wonju or Korea and submit it via email to Wonju City.
- Produce literary works throughout the residency period.
